望我大陸﹔

大陸不可見兮，

隻有痛哭。

葬我於高山之上兮，

天蒼蒼，

Gazing Toward the Mainland

Bury me upon a lofty mountain,
That I may gaze toward my mainland;
Yet though I strain my eyes, I see it not—
And can do naught but weep.

Bury me upon a lofty mountain,
That I may gaze toward my native home;
Yet my homeland cannot be seen—
Never can it be forgotten.

The heavens are vast and gray,
The plains stretch boundless and wide;
Upon the mountain summit
Abides the sorrow of a nation. .

思念內子高仲林(外一首)

夢饒關西舊戰場，

迂回大隊過咸陽，

白頭夫婦白頭淚，

親見阿婆作艷裝。

Thinking of My Wife Gao Zhonglin

(October 1950)

In dreams I roam the old battlefields west of Hangu Pass;
Winding onward, the great columns pass through Xianyang.
White-haired husband and wife, with white-haired tears;
I seem to see my old wife dressing herself in bright attire.

解放戰爭后期，于右任亟盼和談成功，但最終“無可奈何花落去”。1949年，右任被裹挾到孤島。在台灣，他思慕故鄉和親人，賦詩寄懷《思念內子高仲林》字字情切。于右任與友人說：“今年我老伴80壽辰，可惜回不了大陸，很為傷感！”此事周恩來輾轉得知后，即指示於右任的女婿屈武為於夫人祝壽。事后，屈武把做壽的家人照片寄給於右任，並在信中說：“濂溪先生關心此事。”“濂溪先生”即《愛蓮說》的作者周敦頤，于右任一看就自然聯想到另一位姓周的要人，於是請人轉達對這位“濂溪先生”的謝意。周恩來深情地回復說：“隻要於先生高興，我們就心安了。”于右任最后的歲月是在疾病和憂戚中度過的。生不能回大陸，死也要望著故鄉。他佇立在高高的陽明山上，隔海面西，吟頌出那首震撼了整個中華民族的哀歌——《望大陸》。

【作者简介】

于右任（1879–1964），陕西三原人，近代著名政治家、教育家、诗人及书法大家，被誉为"当代草圣"。他是辛亥革命元老，曾参与创办复旦大学、西北农林科技大学前身，曾任国民政府监察院院长。其书法融碑帖于一体，创立"标准草书"；诗词慷慨悲壮，晚年名作《望大陆》（又名 《国殇》）抒发对故乡与祖国统一的深切渴望。

Note:

In the late stage of the Chinese Civil War, Yu Youren ardently hoped that peace negotiations would succeed, but in the end “the falling flowers could not be held back.” In 1949, Yu was swept away to the isolated island of Taiwan. There, longing for his homeland and his family, he composed the deeply emotional poem “Thinking of My Wife Gao Zhonglin.” Yu told his friends: “This year is my wife’s 80th birthday. It is a pity that I cannot return to the mainland. It makes me very sad.”

When Zhou Enlai learned of this through indirect channels, he instructed Yu’s son-in-law, Qu Wu, to celebrate Madam Yu’s birthday on Yu’s behalf. Afterwards, Qu Wu sent Yu a photograph of the family gathering, writing in his letter: “Mr. Lianxi was concerned about this matter.” “Mr. Lianxi” refers to Zhou Dunyi, author of On the Love of the Lotus. Upon seeing this, Yu naturally associated the name with another prominent figure surnamed Zhou, and asked that his gratitude be conveyed to this “Mr. Lianxi.” Zhou Enlai replied with deep warmth: “As long as Mr. Yu is happy, we are at ease.”

Yu Youren spent his final years in illness and sorrow. Unable to return to the mainland in life, he wished at least to face his homeland in death. Standing atop Yangmingshan, looking westward across the strait, he recited the lament that shook the entire Chinese nation—“Looking Toward the Mainland.”**

Introduction to the poet:

Yu Youren (1879–1964)​ was a prominent Chinese revolutionary, statesman, educator, poet, and calligrapher, hailed as the "Sage of Modern Cursive Script (Caoshu)." A veteran of the 1911 Revolution, he co-founded Fudan University and what later became Northwest A&F University, and served as President of the Control Yuan. He developed "Standard Cursive Script" to simplify Chinese calligraphy and wrote poignant poems—most famously Longing for the Homeland (Wang Dalu)—expressing profound yearning for his native Shaanxi and a unified China.
