My top 10. I’ve celebrated the 20th anniversary of my 50th birthday and plan to keep the lights bright.

1. Flow.

A sedentary life causes brain deterioration. Blood flow to the brain keeps oxygen in your brain cells which gives them life. So exercise everyday and keep the lights on.

2. Energize.

Junk food clogs your arteries and lowers energy causing a sedentary lifestyle. Healthy food gives energy to your body and brain. So refuel and brighten the lights.

3. Recharge.

Lack of enough sleep causes deterioration of the brain. Your brain needs downtime to recharge. So give it enough recharging and keep the lights burning bright.

4. Destruction.

Recreational drugs and excessive alcohol damage the brain. And years of it can cause irreparable damage. So first do no harm so you don’t extinguish the light.

5. Lubricate.

Some studies show the benefits of cholesterol in your blood because your brain needs it to function properly. Some suggest a correlation between increase in anti-cholesterol drug use and increased dementia. Research it, make wise decisions and keep the lights on.

6. Relax.

Constant high stress has damaging effects on the brain. And can lead to destructive habits which add damage. Learn to control stress and let the lights shine.

7. Engage.

Like muscles your brain needs exercise. Too often people, after retirement, retire their brains also so they atrophy. So stay engaged, exercise your brain and keep the lights strong.

8. Love.

When people grow isolated their brains lack stimulation. And without stimulation they grow dull. So stay connected with family and friends. Fill up on love and brighten the lights.

9. Adventure.

Many older people lose their zest for new adventures. You don’t need to climb Everest just break out of dull routines. Adventure out and turn up the lights.

10. Purpose.

Often people after they retire, the kids are grown and they’ve accomplished most of what they planned lose interest in life. They grow inward, dull and their life grows small. Instead, find purpose for each day. Then live it to the fullest and keep the lights flaming.

Growing older is mandatory. Letting your light dim, for many, is optional.

2. Consuming too much negative news.

3. Listening to excessively loud music through earphones.

4. Consuming an excessive amount of junk food and alcohol.

5. Excessive smoking.

6. Social isolation.

7. Skipping breakfast and necessary nutrients.

8. Being a couch potato and barely moving throughout the day.

9. Poor sleeping schedule

10. Too much screen time
