I would guess that someone has double vision because both eyes are not aligned. Covering either eye should take make the problem of double vision disappear since you would only have one image to deal with. If the problem exists because one eye is weaker, sometimes the stronger eye is the one covered to help the other catch up and get stronger. I don't mean to alarm you, but the double vision you describe can be a symptom of Multiple Sclerosis.
