In Memory of Jiao Yulu

-  To the tune of Nian Nu Jiao

(Composed on July 15, 1990)

by Xi Jinping

- At midnight, reading the article "People Calling for Jiao Yulu",  the clear moon shone like silver, my thoughts lingered on the text .....

Your soul has soared ten thousand miles high,

You are longed to return,

To this rivers, this mountains, and this place.

What common folk would not love a good official?.

By paulownia named Jiao my tears pour like rain,

You lived to work on the sand dunes,

And you were laid in rest by the sand dunes,

People’s fate are bound to your life and death.

Evening snow and morning frost,

Never altered your heroic spirit!

Still the moon shines as of old,

I think of you night after night,

Your heart ever pure like rinsed gall and liver,

The road is long, its course far-reaching.

You come and go with clean sleaves,

Holding one post,

Bringing fortune to one land,

Thus fulfilling a lifelong wish.

The green trickles and drops of ours

Will converge into thousand ares of azure sea.

Notes:

In those years, Jiao Yulu promoted the planting of paulownia trees in order to guard against wind and fix shifting sands, and to help farmers escape poverty. Today, paulownia trees flourish across Lankao like a sea. The saplings personally planted by Jiao Yulu have grown into great trees that take two arms to encircle, and the people affectionately call them “Jiao Trees.” The poem "Tune: To the Melody of Nian Nu Jiao · In Memory of Jiao Yulu" was first published on July 16, 1990, in the Fuzhou Evening News, front page.

Before his death, Jiao Yulu said: “I have only one request, after I die I ask the Party organization to bring me back to Lankao and bury me on the sand dunes. While alive I did not succeed in controlling the dunes; after death I still want to watch you finish the task of taming them!”
