Ancient Teachings on Filial Piety

夫孝敬仁义,百行之首,行之而立,身之本也。孝敬则宗族安之, 仁义则乡党重之, 此行成于内, 名著于外者矣。- 《魏志》【註1】

Filial piety, respect, benevolence, and righteousness are foremost among all virtues; to practice them is to establish oneself, for they are the foundation of establishing oneself. With filial piety and respect, the clan is at peace; with benevolence and righteousness, the community holds one in esteem. These virtues, cultivated within, will bring renown without. --《Records of Wei

百善孝为先,万恶淫为源。-- 《围炉夜话》【註2】

【註2】《围炉夜话》是清代学者王永彬(1792–1867)所著的一本语录体、格言体读物。全书篇幅不大,却内容精炼,融合儒家、道家和生活智慧,涵盖修身、处世、人伦、读书、交友等主题。书名“围炉夜话”表现出一种在炉火旁夜间谈心、静思的氛围,因此本书的语录也多以温和、平实、启发性为特色。全书共365则短语,每日一则,成为读者日常修身与自省的格言集。该书在近现代广泛流传,因内容通俗易懂、富有启示,被视为日常生活中随读随悟的智慧小品。

【註3】《孝经》是中国传统文化中专门论述“孝道”的经典著作,成书年代约在战国至汉代之间。传统上相传为孔子与弟子曾参的问答记录,虽学界对作者有不同意见,但其思想影响深远。全书以对话体写成,共十八章(部分版本二十二章),围绕孝道如何在家庭、社会、政治和修身中体现。篇幅不长,却思想系统有力。《孝经》强调“孝”为德之本,是个人品德、社会和谐、政治治理的根基,因此成为传统礼教的重要经典,被长期作为教育教材,在中国、日本、朝鲜半岛等地广为流传。其思想要点包括:敬父母和家庭、慎言行、重礼仪、尊上位、推爱于民,体现家庭伦理道德对社会政治秩序的深刻影响。

Note 2: 《Night Talks by the Hearth》 is a work by the Qing-dynasty scholar Wang Yongbin (1792–1867). Written in an aphoristic, short-paragraph style, the book is concise yet rich in insight, combining Confucian, Daoist, and practical wisdom. It addresses themes such as self-cultivation, conduct, human relations, reading, and friendship. The title evokes an atmosphere of warm nighttime reflections by the hearth, and accordingly the sayings in the book carry a tone that is gentle, accessible, and contemplative. The text consists of 365 short passages, one for each day of the year, making it a collection of daily maxims for personal cultivation and reflection. It has been widely read in modern times for its approachable style and instructive insights, often regarded as a handy source of everyday wisdom.

Note 3:《The Classic of Filial Piety》 is an ancient Chinese text devoted entirely to the concept of filial piety. It was composed sometime between the Warring States and early Han periods. Traditionally, it is attributed to Confucius and his disciple Zeng Shen in a question-and-answer format, though modern scholarship offers mixed views on its authorship. The text is written in a dialogue form, consisting of eighteen chapters (twenty-two in some editions). It explores how filial piety manifests in family life, social order, governance, and personal cultivation. Though brief, it presents a systematic and influential moral philosophy. The 《Classic》 emphasizes filial piety as the root of virtue and the foundation of personal morality, social harmony, and proper governance. Because of this, it became a core text of traditional moral education and has been widely studied in China, Japan, and Korea for centuries. Key ideas include reverence for parents, family harmony, careful conduct, respect for ritual, proper attitude toward authority, and extension of care to the people,showing how family virtue exerts a deep influence on social and political order.

Note 4:《The Family Sayings of Confucius》 is a classical text that records the words, behaviors, and teachings of Confucius. It is said to have been compiled by Confucius's disciples and later followers. The surviving version was generally considered as compiled and finalized during the late Eastern Han or the Wei–Jin periods. The text uses various formats, dialogues, anecdotes, question-and-answer exchanges, making it structurally flexible. It complements the 《Analects》, though some passages differ from mainstream Confucian ideas, offering additional perspectives for understanding Confucius. During the Tang dynasty, it was considered an important Confucian classic. Later scholarship questioned its authenticity, leading to debates about its reliability. Nevertheless, its elegant language and rich content give it significant cultural and historical value. Its themes span education, ethics, ritual norms, political ideals, self-cultivation, and offering a broader picture of Confucian thought.
