Introduction to the poet: Martyr Zhu Yuancheng (1876-1907) was born in Jingmen, Hubei Province. In 1904, he participated in organizing the Science Tutoring Center and engaged in anti-Qing revolutionary activities. When the Science Tutoring Center was closed by the Qing government he joined the Rizhi Society. In 1906, he traveled to Japan, met Sun Yat-sen in Tokyo, and joined the Chinese Revolutionary Alliance. Shortly after he returned to China and contacted revolutionary party members in the New Army in Wuchang and Hankou. Due to a traitor's informing, the Rizhi Society matter was leaked. On December 29th, he was arrested at the Miaojia Wharf in Hankou and subsequently imprisoned along with Liu Jing'an, Ji Yulin, Zhang Nanxian, and others. After several trials by Qing officials, he remained steadfast and unyielding. On May 6, 1907, he passed away in prison in Jiangxia (now Wuchang, Wuhan) due to blood dysentery. Later he was buried at Xiejiaqiao in Jiangling, Hubei Province. In September 1981, the People's Government of Hubei Province posthumously recognized Zhu Yuancheng as a revolutionary martyr.
