I am grateful for our vibrant and supportive community. It is because of our generous neighbors that Queens Library can offer outstanding collections, programs, and services that promote children’s literacy, foster a lifelong love of learning, develop skills that transform lives, and build strong communities.  Together, we ensure that Queens Library is for everyone.

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that the Mayor and City Council today reached an agreement to add $33 million to the expense budgets of the City’s three library systems. As you know, we had been facing and preparing for an $11 million cut.

Although the specifics are not yet final, this increase will allow QPL to continue providing essential services in the face of rising costs, our growing footprint, and increased demand for our programs, services and resources.

Thanks to our outstanding advocacy team and to all of you for your hard work in urging the public to make clear to our City’s leaders how much our libraries mean to them.

This budget deal underscores how important the work you do every day is to the City and how indispensable libraries are.

Below is the statement from the three library heads we plan to send to the media this afternoon.

I will update you with more information as we work out the details.

Dennis Walcott, CEO of Queens Public Library

Statement on New York City’s Fiscal Year 2020 Budget Agreement by the Presidents and CEOs of Brooklyn Public Library,

The New York Public Library and Queens Public Library

We are extremely grateful to Mayor de Blasio, City Council Speaker Corey Johnson and the entire City Council for investing $33 million in additional expense funding for the City’s public libraries. This crucial support will allow us to continue providing essential services in the face of rising costs, growing footprints, and increased demand.

We recognize the passionate advocacy of Speaker Johnson, Finance Chair Danny Dromm, and Cultural Affairs & Libraries Chair Jimmy Van Bramer, who have prioritized our vital institutions in a difficult budget year. On behalf of our millions of patrons and the hundreds of thousands who signed letters, called their representatives, and attended rallies to fight for their libraries, thank you for standing with us.  We also applaud our staff members and union leaders for galvanizing tremendous support citywide.

You have collectively ensured that public libraries—which offer opportunity to all and are the heart of a fair and equitable city—remain strong at a critical time in our history, when New Yorkers, especially the most vulnerable, need them the most.

Thanksgiving Day is the perfect time to remind one another of the many reasons to be grateful. On behalf of the NYPD Community Affairs Bureau, I would like to wish everyone a very happy and healthy Thanksgiving Holiday.

Notification issued 12-24-2019 at 9:27 AM. FDNY is on the scene of a fire in a high-rise building located near East 56th Street and 1st Avenue in Manhattan. Expect smoke, traffic delays, and a presence of emergency personnel and vehicles in the area. The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene advises avoiding smoke exposure from structural fires by closing windows while indoors and reducing outdoor activity where smoke is present. People with heart or breathing conditions such as asthma may be more sensitive and should seek immediate medical attention if they experience a worsening of their condition, shortness of breath, or chest pains.
