Queens Library Mission Statement
The mission of the Queens Library is to provide quality services, resources, and lifelong learning opportunities through books and a variety of other formats to meet the informational, educational, cultural, and recreational needs and interests of its diverse and changing population.
The Library is a forum for all points of view and adheres to the principles of intellectual freedom as expressed in the Library Bill of Rights formulated by the American Library Association.
Vision
The Queens Library represents a fundamental public good in our democracy. It assures the right, the privilege and the ability of individuals to choose and pursue any direction of thought, study or action they wish.
The Library provides the capital necessary for us to understand the past and grow for the future. It is also our collective memory, since history and human experience are best preserved in writing.
As Queens Library enters its second century, it will be universally recognized as the most dynamic public library in the nation. This recognition will arise from: the Library's dedication to the needs of its diverse communities; its advocacy and support of appropriate technology; the excellence of its programs and services; the commitment of its staff to its customers and the very highest ideals of library service.
We at Queens Library believe deeply in equity and that libraries are fundamental in empowering people to take charge of their lives, their governments and their communities. In this way, Queens Library has an essential role to play in the new economy. The programs and services we provide and the technologies we embrace will carry the people of Queens into a productive and creative future.

Customers
We believe that meeting the needs of our diverse customer base is first and foremost.

The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag
Congressional sessions open with the recital of the Pledge, as do many government meetings at local levels, and meetings held by many private organizations. All states except California, Hawaii, Iowa, Vermont, and Wyoming require a regularly scheduled recitation of the pledge in public schools. California requires a "patriotic exercise" every day, which would be satisfied by the Pledge, but it is not universally enforced. The Supreme Court has ruled in West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette that students cannot be compelled to recite the Pledge, nor can they be punished for not doing so. In a number of states, state flag pledges of allegiance are required to be recited after this.
The United States Flag Code says:
The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag:
"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
It should be rendered by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. When not in uniform men should remove any non-religious headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute. Members of the Armed Forces not in uniform and veterans may render the military salute in the manner provided for persons in uniform.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, born October 13, 1989), often referred to by her initials, AOC, is an American politician and activist who serves as the U.S. Representative for New York's 14th congressional district beginning 2019. The district includes the eastern part of the Bronx and portions of north-central Queens in New York City. She is a member of the Democratic Party.
Ocasio-Cortez drew national recognition when she won the Democratic Party's primary election for New York's 14th congressional district on June 26, 2018. She defeated Democratic Caucus Chair Joe Crowley, a 10-term incumbent, in what was widely seen as the biggest upset victory in the 2018 midterm election primaries. She defeated Republican opponent Anthony Pappas in the November 6, 2018, general election. At age 29, Ocasio-Cortez became the youngest woman ever to serve in the United States Congress. Ocasio-Cortez has been noted for her substantial social media presence relative to her fellow members of Congress. In July 2019 news articles about her received at least four times as many interactions as those about any Democratic presidential candidate.
Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib are the first two female members of the Democratic Socialists of America to serve in Congress, and Ocasio-Cortez is the first member to serve from the Bronx or Queens. Ocasio-Cortez advocates a progressive platform that includes Medicare for all, a federal jobs guarantee, a proposed Green New Deal, abolishing the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, free public college and trade school, and a 70% marginal tax rate for incomes above $10 million.
Ocasio-Cortez majored in international relations and economics at Boston University, graduating cum laude in 2011. She then worked as a waitress and bartender before running for Congress in 2018; she also served as an educational director for the five-day-long 2017 Northeast Collegiate World Series for the National Hispanic Institute.

Team,
It is that time of year where we need to plan many months into the future and secure the vacation time you and your staff need/want from July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020.
With many new staff members and changes in policy, it is critical to review this information with your staff as soon as possible.
When planning fiscal year ’20 scheduled annual leave, please consider the following:
- Keep in mind the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Union and the Library:
- “annual leave shall be scheduled by the Library consistent with overall staffing needs, in each agency, based on the choice of those employees with the greatest system-wide seniority in classification series…”
- Please be sure to schedule requested days for religious observance.
- As all staff will be receiving the entirety of their FY ’20 annual leave allocation on July 1, 2019, there should be less of a need to carry over more than 10 days into the next fiscal year.
- Under extraordinary circumstances, an employee may submit a written request for authorization to carry over unused Annual Leave in excess of the 10 days allowed.
- Please use attached document for this request.
- All requests should be submitted to Nick Buron Nick.Buron@QueensLibrary.org via email or interoffice mail by April 12, 2019.
- Requests received after this date will NOT be considered.
- To secure a given Saturday off, you need to schedule the Friday before AND the following Monday as annual leave.
- This does NOT apply for the Saturday after being off Monday-Friday.
- Managers must assume that they will NOT get assistance when staff is off due to scheduled annual leave and should plan vacation and monthly schedules accordingly.
Deadlines to keep in mind:
- April 12, 2019 Last day for staff to submit written request to Nick Buron to carry over more than 10 unused annual leave days from fiscal year 2017-18.
- April 26, 2019 Responses to all requests will be sent.
- May 3, 2019 All Community Libraries, Central Library, ALCs, TSD and PSD staff must submit their vacation schedules to their appropriate Director.
- May 17, 2019 Department Head approves all vacation schedules for department.
- June 1, 2019 Staff schedules are posted for July 2019.
Dates to keep in mind:
- Thursday, July 4, 2019 Queens Library will be closed all day

Subject: Summer Meals 2019
It time to start thinking about Summer Meals.
Last years’ summer meals program was a huge success with 34 locations serving 55,724 meals!
Those lunches represent the highest number of meals served by any library system in New York State!
Those 34 locations should be proud of the number of children we were able to feed.
All community libraries are encouraged to be a Summer Meals library.
Will your library participate this year?
If your community library is interested in participating, please review the following:
· Summer Meals ’19 will run from Thursday, June 27th until Friday, August 30st.
· Lunches will be served Monday- Friday from 1pm-2pm.
· Volunteer Services will provide assistance in serving lunches.
· Please bear in mind that union staff are welcome to volunteer to participate in Summer Meals but they cannot be mandated.
· You can ask hourly rate workers to assist you with Summer Meals.
· Each location must have at least 1 person with the Safe Food Certificate.
· It is required that each location have someone on site with the certification while meals are served. The person with the certification does not need to be the person serving lunches.
· Food safety trainings will be offered in May. Exact dates to be announced..
· There is a mandatory Summer Meals orientation with School Foods. This will take place in May or early June.
· Each location must have a point person for summer meals.
· The point person will be responsible for summer meals volunteers, making sure that the lunch count is submitted, notifying Daniel Nkansah in PSD of any service coverage needs and ensuring that meals are served.
The deadline to sign up for Summer Meals is Friday, March 22nd.
If you would like to be a Summer Meals site please fill out the attached form and email it back to Daniel Nkansah (dnkansah@queenslibrary.org) by March 22th.
Thank you,
Nick
