Lefrak City Library

Sept. 2, 2020 Wednesday

Dear Colleagues,

This past Friday, tens of thousands of people from across the country convened in Washington, D.C. to amplify the nationwide calls for racial justice for Black Americans. The gathering marked the 57th anniversary of the March on Washington, where Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his historic “I Have a Dream” speech.
The rally comes a week after Jacob Blake was shot multiple times in the back while he walked away from a group of officers outside an apartment building in Kenosha, Wisconsin, paralyzing him from the waist down.
It seems incomprehensible that incidents of white police officers brutalizing Black individuals continue to occur with alarming frequency in the United States, despite the many protests this summer to reform police departments following the murder of George Floyd in May. But what I firmly understand is that it is going to take a very long time and a lot of difficult and sometimes painful work to bring about lasting change. I remain hopeful it eventually will come to every corner of this nation.
At the same time, it is inevitable that racist acts and behavior will persist in our society. This reality is among the many factors that have strengthened QPL’s resolve to ensure a fair and just workplace for our Black employees and for our entire staff, and a fair and just experience for our customers.
As you are aware, one of the ways Queens Public Library is moving toward these goals is through the President’s Council for Racial Equity, whose work is now underway. So far more than 50 members of our staff have joined the Council, which already has taken several important steps to create a framework for moving forward.
During its first WebEx meeting on August 18, the Council started the process of forming committees and learning more about the roots of and history of anti-Black racism in this country. Yesterday, a survey was distributed to each member to understand their expertise and involvement with racial justice issues. A second meeting will be scheduled in a few weeks.
I will be providing you with regular updates about the Council’s progress in the coming months, and I am grateful to each member for their commitment to addressing the inequity and that Black Americans have endured over the past 401 years.
Enjoy the rest of your week.
Dennis

Speech on Friends of the Library Event -

by Greg Gao, manager of Lefrak City Library, December 11, 2017

Good evening, Friends of the library,

Tonight all attending are our friends and loyal customers of Lefrak City Library.

During the year, Friends of the Library group at Lefrak City has done a great job to enrich life for the community of all ages. They have successfully presented programs like Spelling Bees, Family Fun night, commemorating Black History Month and Woman History Month, and Adult coloring, adult crafts, and so on. Some are done together with the Library staff. I’d like to say a big Thank You to all members of the Lefrak City Friends of the Library.

Tonight we gather here to show our support of the Friends group, especially the Right Fitness programs given by Mr. Ronald William, President of the Friends group. This program is one of the most successful ever presented in Lefrak City Library. Therefore it has enjoyed the longevity ever seen in this library. It’s been here almost three years, presenting over 100 sessions. Mr. Williams started  the physical exercise program as part of the “ShapeUp NYC” campaign in 2015, then continued with dynamic exercise called “Total Fitness” and now dancing fitness. Our customers like it and it keeps an excellent attendance record. Our customers benefit from the program and they not only enjoy the liveliness of the program, but they get really good exercises, achieving physical fitness.

Now December it is the holiday season, also it is also the giving season,  in order to keep the fitness program still going in Lefrak City Library, the library staff and myself will be very much appreciate to see you showing , giving support to Right Fitness by donating some money $10, $5, $20. Any amount of money will help towards the growth of the program and keeping the program in the Library.

Happy holiday season to everybody! Thank you very much!

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Together we made history! Your hard work and dedication to our community helped me get elected. Thank you for the opportunity to lead on dozens of life changing issues including the Green Light Bill (Driver's Licenses For All)the Child Victims Act, and the strongest rent laws in recent history.

But as we continue to fight for the policies that help us create the kind of community we deserve, we need your help now more than ever: just last week, we learned that we officially have an opponent in the Democratic primary, and he is already knocking on doors working to discredit the movement YOU helped us build.

Will you help us protect our seat at the table by contributing $10, $25, or $50today?

I hope I can count on you!

Catalina Cruz

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Since elected a little more than a year ago, I have advocated for hundreds of bills in Albany that have changed the course of history, including the NYS DREAM Act, the Child Victim’s Act, and Driver's Licenses for All. Now more than ever we need your help to stay in Albany and keep our seat at the table.

Our opponent is already collecting signatures, so our friends at the New Visions Democratic Club, LGDCQ, and New Queens Democrats have teamed up for a day of action this coming Saturday! We need to collect hundreds of signatures to secure our place on the ballot and a chance to continue representing you. Will you join us?

Team,

In an abundance of caution, tomorrows Public Service meeting at the Flushing Library will be postponed until a future date to be determined.

Attached are Informational Notes to share with your management team and staff.

Thank you for your flexibility and understanding,

由于新冠病毒在美国的蔓延,图书馆取消大型会议,并要求拿掉儿童玩具等顾客共用物品:

March 10, 2020

In an abundance of caution, Queens Public Library has made the decision, for the moment, to remove all toys from public use. This includes the toys that we use for TLC. I am not cancelling the program as there is value to having the presenters be available to parents and caregivers. I know that this is very disappointing for the families that have come to expect this socialization for their children. I encourage you to be creative in how you approach the program. You are still able to do crafts, stories, coloring, and other activities that do not include the shared play materials. You are also able to do the parent information portion of the program on your library floor. I would suggest setting the presenter up at a table and encourage your families to speak with the presenter in that way.

At this time, you will received some new supplies for TLC. Please do not unpack or use these items. For your existing toys, I have purchased antibacterial soap that will be sent out to each location. Please have your TLC monitor use their time to clean the toys and pack them away.

I know that this will cause strain on you and the public, but please know, and remind everyone, that this is for the health of our communities to whom we are deeply committed.

Should anything change in the directives, we will promptly let you know.

If you have any questions at this time, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.

Full-time and Part-Time Resignations and Retirements

Tuesday, December 06, 2016 1:57 PM
Good Afternoon,
The Human Resources Team would like to gently remind you about the Library’s procedures regarding full-time and part-time employee resignations and retirements.

Full-Time Resignations and Retirements
Full-time employees who plan to leave the Library must inform the President and CEO, Human Resources Department and supervisor about their departure in writing.  The notice of resignation must include the date of last day you will be at your work site. Advanced notice of at least two weeks prior to your resignation and at least six weeks prior to your retirement is recommended in order to process your final paperwork in a timely manner.

Accrued annual leave is paid to employees upon their separation from the Library.  Employees with 10 years or more of active service may convert a percentage of their sick leave balance to terminal leave, which is paid up to 120 days upon separation of employment.

Please submit to Human Resources your original, signed and approved timesheets through your final day of work.  Remember to return any Library property, including employee ID, office keys, phone, laptop/computer, etc., to your immediate supervisor on or before your final day at work.

Please contact Jasmin Calhoun at Jasmin.Calhoun@queenslibrary.org  or 718-990-0815 with any questions.

Hourly Rate (Part-Time) Resignations
Please notify your immediate supervisor in advance of your separation from employment in order to process your final paperwork.  Supervisors should submit the original final timesheet and completed Hourly Rate Separation Form to the Payroll Office.  Copies of the final timesheet and separation form should be submitted to Human Resources.  The Hourly Rate Separation form can be found on the Human Resources Department staff page, under HRD Forms.

Please contact Jezabelle Durecout at Jezabelle.Durecout@queenslibrary.org  or 718-990-0736 with any questions.

Thank you,

Notice of Retirement

July 24 Friday 2020

Dear Dennis Walcott, CEO & President,

I am writing to say farewell to you. The past over 23 years of my service in QPL has been one of the most rewarding experience in my life. I have greatly enjoyed my time as part of the Queens Library team. I feel very fortunate to have worked with such diverse customers and dedicated staff.

In the recent 4 months I am very much impressed by the precautionary measures taken by QPL management to protect the staff and our customer, while serving the diverse communities virtually online with various programs in the unprecedented time of COVID-19 pandemic, and the recent gradual re-opening of the physical library locations to welcome in our customers.

I'd like to thank all my supervisors and my colleagues for all the generous help, assistance, supports and understanding that were kindly rendered to me during the past 23 years.

Please accept this letter as my notice of retirement, with the last day of employment being September 4 Friday 2020. I wish the best for you and Queens Public Library in all future endeavors.

Best Regards,

Greg

Your messages for my retirement are better than anything else. Jiang called me this afternoon about a possible party. Because of the COVID-19 condition, it is not a very good way to say goodbye. He agreed with me not to have any gathering at this time. After the pandemic we can meet anywhere, in NYC or in Houston. Thank you all for the kind thoughts!

Let's keep in touch, and be well & safe,

Whether we carry a $300 or $30 wallet/handbag - - - the amount of money inside is the same.

Whether we drink a bottle of $300 or $30 or $3 wine - - - the hangover is the same.

Whether the house we live in is 300 or 3,000 or 30,000 sq. ft. - - - the loneliness is the same.

And we realize our true inner happiness does not come from the material things of this world.
