The charming plums in dazzling purple and radiant red scorn to mimic others,

Her true spirit shines alone at winter’s end.

Growing deep in the mountain by creeks under cliffs,

Quite a few flowers in full bloom owing nothing to spring.

【诗人简介】革命烈士 -- 宁调元(1883~1913),自號「太一先生」近代民主革命烈士, 湖南醴陵人。1904年加入华兴会,次年留学日本,并加入同盟会。回国后创办杂志,宣傳反清革命,遭清政府通缉,逃亡日本。萍浏醴起义爆发后,回国策应,在岳州被捕,入狱3年。出狱后赴北京,主编《帝国日报》。1912年初在上海参加民社,创办《民声日报》。后赴广东任三佛铁路总办。二次革命期间来沪,参与讨袁之役。后赴武汉讨袁起义,被捕后遇害于武昌。其诗激昂悲壮,风格沉郁,作品多写于狱中,著有《太一遗书》。

Introduction to the poet: Revolutionary Martyr Ning Tiaoyuan (1883-1913) was a martyr of the modern democratic revolution from Liling, Hunan Province. He joined the Huaxing Association in 1904, studied in Japan the next year, and joined the Chinese Revolutionary Alliance. After returning to China, he founded a magazine and promoted the anti-Qing revolution. He was wanted by the Qing government and fled to Japan. After the outbreak of the Pingliuli Uprising, he returned to China to support; and he was arrested in Yuezhou and imprisoned for three years. After being released from prison, he went to Beijing and served as the editor in chief of the 《Imperial Daily》. In early 1912, he joined the Min Society in Shanghai and founded the 《Minsheng Daily》. Afterwards, he went to Guangdong to serve as the General Officer of Sanfo Railway. During the Second Revolution, he came to Shanghai and participated in the campaign against Yuan. Later, he went to Wuhan for the anti-Yuan Uprising, and he was arrested, and was killed in Wuchang. His verse carries a stirring, tragic power, with a melancholic style. Many of his works were written in prison, and he is the author of 《Posthumous Works of Tai Yi》。
