Introduction to the poet: Yuan Mei (1716–1797) was a poet and prose writer of the Qing dynasty. His courtesy name was Zicai, his style name was Jianzai, and he was also known by the sobriquet “Old Man of Suiyuan,” commonly referred to as “Master of Suiyuan.” He was a native of Qiantang, Zhejiang (present-day Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province), with ancestral roots in Cixi of Zhejiang Province. He once served as magistrate of Jiangning (present-day Jiangning District, Nanjing, Jiangsu Province). He was regarded as one of the “Eight Great Masters of Parallel Prose of the Qing Dynasty” and one of the “Three Masters of Jiangyou.” His literary reputation was equal to that of Ji Yun , the Grand Secretary from Zhili (Ji Yu's courtesy name is Ji Xiaolan, a native of Hejian of Hebei Province), and together they were praised as “Yuan of the South, Ji of the North.”
