For many Americans, the typical day-to-day diet consists of junk, processed and refined foods that add little, if any, nutritional value to their lives.
Even people who focus on a diet rich in fruits and vegetables don’t get the nutrients they assume they’re getting thanks to our depleted soil.
This is a problem, because as we age, we tend to have trouble absorbing nutrients, which can lead to dangerous deficiencies. Between poor GI health, stress, and prescription medication, our bodies are robbed of the nutrients they need to stay healthy.
Without the proper nutrients, our brain simply cannot perform optimally. This is why proper supplementation is critical to our health.
If you’ve hit a “certain age” and are concerned about cognitive decline, these supplements can keep your brain young.
B Vitamins
B vitamins are some of the most necessary nutrients on the planet. Not only do B vitamins make it possible for us to extract energy from our food, they also help our bodies create new red blood cells and protect our nervous system.
A deficiency in B vitamins can lead to cognitive impairment and decline, so be sure to invest in a quality supplement.
Vitamin D
Often called the sunshine vitamin, vitamin D is mainly produced by our skin when it is exposed to sunlight. You’d think it would be almost impossible to become deficient in this vitamin, yet many people are. This is in no small part due to the decades-long low-fat craze, which saw people eating less fat and more carbs. Vitamin D needs fat to be absorbed and used by our bodies.
Not only is vitamin D crucial for calcium uptake and regulation as well as assisting in cell communication, but vitamin D also plays an important role in mental function. According to the Vitamin D Council, lower vitamin D blood levels are linked to a higher risk of cognitive impairment.
Omega-3
Just like essential vitamins, omega-3s are essential nutrients that cannot be made by the body, so must be taken by foods or supplementation. Why are omega-3s so important? Without them your cell membranes would not function properly and leak. You also couldn’t make certain hormones or relax your arteries.
But omega-3s are also incredibly important to your brain health. Many studies have found that supplementing with fish oil can lead to improved cognitive function and a reduced level of atrophy.
Omega-3s have also been heralded as a safer alternative to antidepressants.
Copper and Iron
Without copper and iron, our bodies cannot form new red blood cells. Because of this, a copper and iron deficiency can cause anemia and impaired cognition.
Zinc
Zinc plays a hypercritical role in the brain and because of this, a deficiency can actually cause the death of neurons. Zinc is responsible for regulating communication between the hippocampus and the brain’s neurons. This role has a direct impact on memory and learning capacity. Zinc supplementation can lead to an improvement in memory and cognition.
