惺惺长不足，蒙蒙作公卿。
遍身绮罗者，不是养蚕人。
 The bright are always discontented but the honest are often happy and free.
Those who wear silk-clothes are never silkworm raisers.
毋私小惠而伤大体，毋借公论而快私情。
毋以己长而形人之短，毋因己拙而忌人之能。
勿恃势力而凌逼孤寡，勿贪口福而恣杀牲禽。
依势凌人，势败而人凌我。
穷巷追狗，巷穷则狗咬人。
Don’t infringe the interest of the masses for the sake of private benefit, nor use public opinions for personal gain.
Don’t exaggerate other people’s weak point with your strong one, nor envy others their ability on account of your stupidity.
Don’t insult and oppress widows and orphans with your influence, nor willfully slaughter birds and beasts on account of your appetite.
He who insults and oppresses others with his own power and influence will be insulted and oppressed once he has not authority;
If one drives a dog to a blind alley, the dog will bite him. (It means beasts at bay will put up a desperate fight)
见色而起淫心，报在妻女；
匿怨而用暗箭，祸延子孙。
He who harbors a sexual desire on seeing a beauty will be retaliated upon by that his wife and daughter are insulted。
He who shoots others from behind place on account of personal feud will bring misfortune to his coming generations.
先到为君，后到为臣。
莫道君行早，更有早行人。
灭却心头火，剔起佛前灯。
平日不作亏心事，半夜敲门心不惊。
牡丹花好空入目，枣花虽小结实成。
众星朗朗，不如暗处一灯；
鼓打千椎，不如雷轰一声。
He who arrives early is the lord and he who arrives late is the subject.
Don’t think you start early as there are people who have done still earlier than you.
Put out the desire flame in your heart and make the light bright before Buddha.
He who hasn’t done a deed that trouble his conscience doesn’t tremble with fear on hearing his door knocked at midnight [It means a clean hand wants no washing].
Beautiful as the peony flowers are, they are only good-looking; small as the date flowers are, they bring sweet fruits.
Many stars in the sky do not shine brighter than a single moon; many lights that brightly illuminate a whole pagoda are not more useful to the pedestrians than a single one in the dark.
The sound produced by thousands of drumsticks is not louder than that done by one thunderclap.
良田百亩，不如薄技随身。
富厚福泽，不过厚吾之生.
贫贱忧戚，乃是玉汝于成。
One hundred hectares of fertile farmland you own are not better than a wonderful skill you hold.
Happiness and wealth only benefits your life; while poverty and care will steel you and help you succeed in your cause.
命薄福浅，树大根深。
非上上智，无了了心。
烈士让千乘，贪夫争一文。
An ill-fated man has hard lot; a tall tree has deep root.
Without supreme wisdom you have hardly any power to get great intelligence。Hiding one’s sickness for fear of treatment is similar to plugging one’s ears while stealing a bell.
The person of high endeavor gives up thousands of chariots [It stands for the power of a kingdom] while the miser contends for a single coin.
气是无名火，忍是敌灾星。
但存方寸地，留与子孙耕。
万事劝人休瞒昧，举头三尺有神明。
为恶畏人知，恶中犹有善路；
为善急人知，善处即是恶根。
贫贱骄人，虽涉虚矫，还有几分侠气；
奸雄欺世，纵似挥霍，全没半点真心。
Anger is the flame without light; endurance is the star that fights against misfortune.
Leave a little room in your heart for your children to work in --- benefit future generation.
Don’t do any evil against your conscience, because the god always keeps an eye on you above your head.
Do evil and fear being known, then you have still a way out among the evils; do good work and be eager to be known by all, then there is an evil root that lies in what you have done.
In poor and humble circumstances but showing haughtiness, though he has affected manners, still has a little heroic spirit; an ambitious scoundrel gains fame by deceiving the public, though he seems generous and heroic, yet by no means is kind and honest.
扫地红尘飞，才著工夫便起障；
开窗日月进，能通灵窍自生明。
发念处既遏三大欲，到头时方全一点真。
That the dusts start to fly when you sweep the ground [ a metaphor referring to clearing up your distracting thoughts] hints that there are obstacles on your way to understand the truth;
That the sunlight and moonlight come in when you open the window [a metaphor referring to good intention] hints that you have held the key to the problem and grasp everything.
(Here the ground and the window are metaphors referring to vitality and constitution, the dust referring to the wild fancy and the moon referring to the real thought.)
When you start a great deed, avoid the three desires, i.e. desires of sex, fight and gain, you’ll have the universal vital energy and success in the end.
守分安命，趋吉避凶。
识真方知假；无奸不显忠。
人无千日好；花无百日红。
人老心不老，人穷志不穷。
座上客常满，杯中酒不空。
礼义兴于富足，盗贼出于贫穷。
Keep your duty and be content with your lot; contend for good fortune and avoid misfortune.
Identify the genuine then you will be able to know the false; without treachery there will appear no loyalty.
No man can remain good for three years, and no flower can remain beautiful for one hundred days.
One should become firm and strong with the day when one grows old; one may be poor but should never cease being ambitious.
The banquet hall is always packed with guests of honor and the glasses at the dining table are always full of wine.
Living in abundance brings forth rites, while in poverty brings forth thieves.
乍富不知新受用；乍贫难改旧家风。
天上有星皆拱北；世间无水不朝东。
白发不随人老去，转眼又是白头翁。
屋漏更遭连阴雨，船慢又被打头风。
笋因落箨方成竹，鱼为奔波始化龙。
He who suddenly gets rich seldom knows how to enjoy more comfort and he who suddenly gets poor hardly changes his old style of generous life.
All the stars in the sky surround the Plough and all the rivers in the world flow eastward.
Grey hairs never disappear with man’s age, while in the twinkling of an eye man gets old.
A leaking house happens to meet rainy days in a row, and slow boat happens to meet a counter-wind ---misfortunes never come singly.
Having got rid of shells the shoot starts growing into bamboo; having swum swiftly for a long journey the fish starts turning into dragon.
汝惟不矜，天下莫与汝争能；汝惟不伐，天下莫与汝争功。
Just because you don’t show off, no man scrambles for ability with you and just because you don’t make boasts, no man contends for credit with you.
明不伤察,直不过矫.
仁能善断,清能有容.
不尽人之欢,不竭人之忠.
不自是而露才,不轻试以幸功.
受享不逾分外,修持不减分中.
待人无半毫诈伪欺隐,处世只一味镇定从容.
The sensible man doesn’t try to find out minor faults, the upright man doesn’t exceed the proper limits in righting a wrong.
The sensible man is resolute in mind and the broad-minded man is lenient.
Don’t make people happy to the greatest extent, nor ask people to be honest to the extreme limit.
Don’t be opinionated and show off, nor rashly try to succeed by luck.
Being rewarded, you must take the proper share but not have it exceed the limit; take the proper way while cultivating yourself.
Honestly and frankly get along with people; calmly and unhurriedly handle various matters.
肝肠煦若春风,虽囊乏一文还怜穷独;
气骨清如秋水,纵家徒四壁终傲王公.
With a warm heart you’ll be able to take care the helpless, though you have not any coins with you;
With an impeccable character, even you are destitute you’ll be able to be haughty before princes and nobles.
急行缓行,前程只有许多路;
逆取顺取,到头总是一场空.
Walk forward fast or unhurriedly; there are always roads before you;
Gain by normal or mean way; there will be always nothing for you to bring to the Hades.
生不认魂,死不认尸.
好言难得,恶语易施.
美玉可沽,善贾且待.
瓦甑既坠,反顾何为?
The living man cannot see his own soul, nor the dead one can see his own corpse.
It is difficult to win praises but easy to utter offensive words.
If you have precious jades that can sell well, keep them for a good price.
The earthen basin has been broken, why do you look at it again?
英雄行险道,富贵似花枝.
人情莫道春光好,只怕秋来有冷时.
父母恩深终有别,夫妻义重也分离.
人生似鸟同林宿,大限来时各自飞.
早把甘旨勤奉养,夕阳光景不多时.
If a heroic man takes risks, then the riches and fame he obtains are nothing but like flower --- they cannot last long.
Don’t think human relationship is always warm as if it was in spring， there is still the time when winter comes.
Though your parents are dear to you, they’ll leave you in the long run。 Though a couple of husband and wife deeply love each other, still they’ll separate at last.
Human lives are like a herd of birds that live in one forest, they would scatter and fly in various directions when happen disasters.
Wait upon your parents with delicious food, as they are old and there are few days left to them.
人善被人欺,马善被人骑.
人恶人怕天不怕,人善人欺天不欺.
善恶到头终有报,只争来早与来迟.
龙逢潜水遭虾戏,虎落平原被犬欺.
但将冷眼观螃蟹,看你横行到几时?
The gentle and soft man is easy to insult and the docile horse is easy to ride.
Man is afraid of evil fellows but God isn’t; the kindhearted person is easy to be insulted by people but not by Heaven.
Good or evil deeds will be rewarded in the long run; it is only a matter of time.
The dragon that swims in shallows will be teased by shrimps and the tiger that goes down to level land will be insulted by dogs --- a metaphor referring to the man who loses position and influence will subject to much indignity.
Cold review the crab (which stands for the scoundrel) and see how long it can run crosswise (which stands for run amuck).
黄河尚有澄清日,岂有人无得运时?
十年窗下无人识,一举成名天下知.
燕雀哪知鸿鹄志,虎狼岂被犬羊欺?
事业文章,随身销毁,而精神万古不灭;
功名富贵,逐世转移,而气节千载如斯.
Even the Yellow River will be clear eventually; can’t a man have any good luck some day?
The poor scholar often remains unknown even he has studied hard for ten years by the cold window, but once he passes the state civil service examination, immediately gets famous all over the country.
How can the swallow and the sparrow know the lofty ambition of the wild swan; how can the tiger and the wolf be bullied and humiliated by the dog and the sheep?
One’s cause and writings will fall into oblivion as one passes away, but one’s spirit will last forever;
One’s fame and fortune will change as the time changes, but one’s moral integrity can remain unchanged for thousands of years.
得宠思辱,居安思危.
国乱思良相,家贫思良妻.
荣宠旁边辱等待,贫贱背后福跟随.
成名每在穷苦日,败事多因得意时.
Consider the humble days in times of high position; be prepared for danger in times of peace.
While the country is in troubled days, men are eager to have a talent premier; while the family is in straitened circumstances, man is eager to have a kind and able wife.
Dishonor often follows glory and rank; poor and lowly circumstances often follow good fortune.
One succeeds often in the time when one is impoverished and fails often in the time when one is immensely proud.
声妓晚景从良,半世之烟花无碍;
贞妇白头失守,一生之清苦俱非.
A prostitute who gets married in her old age may still be considered as a decent woman;
A chaste widow who loses her purity in her old age will no more be a decent one.
闲事休管;无事早归.
假饶染就真红色,也被旁人说是非.
长将酒钥开眉锁,莫把心机织鬓丝.
为人莫作千年计,三十河东四十西.
秋虫春鸟,共畅天机,何必浪生悲喜?
老树新花,同含生意,胡为妄别妍蚩?
Let things drift if they do not affect you personally;
Return home early if there be not any more things to do.
Even though you are really dyed red (referring to getting successful), still are commented on by gossip.
Often free yourself from unhappiness with wine; don’t make your hair grey by racking your brains in scheming.
Don’t make plans for the affairs of one thousand years to come, and man’s destiny is changeable, maybe the people living in this side of river are lucky during the first thirty years and those living in the other side are lucky during the next forty years.
Enjoy the natural happiness with the merry songs of insect in autumn and those of birds in spring, why are you rashly happy and grievous all the time?
New full-blown flowers on old plant are all the same, why should you spend time on evaluating whether they are beautiful or not?
许人一物,千金不移.
一言既出,驷马难追.
鄙吝之极,必生奢男;
厚德之至,定产佳儿.
One’s promise should be kept at any circumstance;
What one has said, even four horses cannot take back-. [It means promise is debt. What has been said cannot be unsaid.]
He who is too miserly will have wasteful sons and he who is honest and kind will have brilliant sons.
日勤三省,夜惕四知.
博学而笃志,切问而近思.
少年不努力,老大徒伤悲.
In the daytime should keep in mind the three principles to be self-examined, (They are: Am I honest when making plans for others? Have I kept my promise in contact with my friends? Have I studied the doctrine the teacher teaches?); at night should guard against the four known things (They are: When you an evil thing, it will known by God, the earth knows, both you and me---there is no absolutely secret dealing.).
Study a wide range of learning but major in one special subject; specially learn knowledge from others but consider matters independently.
If one does not exert oneself in youth, one will regret in old age.
惜钱休教子,护短莫从师.
须知孺子可教,勿谓童子何知.
一举首登龙虎榜,十年身到凤凰池.
进德修业,要个木石的念头,若稍涉矜夸,便趋欲境;
济世经邦,要段云水的趣味,若一有贪恋,便堕危机.
He who grudges his money cannot have his sons well educated and he who shields faults of his son can never invite good teachers for him.
You must be aware of that the youngest can be taught and never think them ignorant.
He who succeeds from the provincial competitive examination at one blow would have the hope to pass the national civil service examination and get a position in the National Academy in ten years.
While making progress and cultivating oneself, one should have an honest intention in mind; otherwise, with a little wicked intention in the heart, one will go astray;
In the course of benefiting the society and managing the state, one should clear one’s mind of all ill intentions, or one would be possible to suffer a personal defeat and a shattered reputation.
官清书吏瘦,神灵庙祝肥.
若要人不知,除非己莫为.
静坐常思己过,闲谈莫论人非.
友如作画须求淡,邻有淳风不攘鸡.
小窗莫听黄鹂鸣,踏破荆花满院飞.
平生最爱鱼无舌,游遍江湖少是非.
无事常如有事提防,才可以弥意外之变;
有事常如无事镇定,才可以消局中之危.
When a government official is honest, the errand men of his will be poor; when the god in the temple is effective, the manager of the temple will be rich.
People will know it unless you haven’t done---Murder will out.
Often self-examine while you are idly sitting; while have a chat with friends, avoid talking about rights of wrongs others have done.
It is better to be clear in making friends as in making traditional Chinese paintings (---be not too close) so the friendship will last long; if there is honest custom in the neighbor-hood there hardly any actions of theft happen.
Don’t listen to the sweet songs of the oriole before your window (a metaphor referring to one’s wife’s words). They would scatter the flowers of chaste tree everywhere (a metaphor referring to one’s brothers).
I love the fish best in my life, as they have no tongues and can swim free everywhere without stirring up trouble in the river and lakes.
Guard against dangers as if you were in trouble while you are in peaceful days, then accidents can be avoided; keep calm as if you were in peaceful days while you are in trouble, the dangerous affairs can be well handled.
三人同行，必有我师；择其善者而从，其不善者改之。
If three people are walking together, at least one of them is good enough to be my teacher; select the good one to follow and the bad one to avoid.
养心莫善于寡欲，无恒不可以作巫医。
It is nothing better than having few desires in preserving one’s health; without constant purpose one cannot be engaged in any work.
狎昵恶少，久必受其累；
屈志老成，急则可相依。
On intimate terms with young scoundrels you’ll be involved in troubles on account of them in the long run;
Respect men of talent and virtue you’ll be able to depend on their help in case of emergence.
心口如一，童叟无欺。
人有善念，天必佑之。
过则无惮改，独则无自欺。
Implement what you preach and be equally honest to aged people and children.
God helps those who hold good intentions.
Don’t fear to correct the mistake you committed nor deceive yourself when you sit alone.
道吾好者是吾贼，道吾恶者是吾师。
He who praises me before my face maybe harbors ill intentions and he who points out my mistakes is my teacher。
入观庭户知勤惰，一出茶汤便见妻
父老奔驰无孝子，要知贤母看儿衣。
入门休问荣枯事，观看容颜便得知。
养儿防老，积谷防饥。
Judging from the courtyard of the family you may know the master is diligent or not and judging from the food the host serves you may know the hostess is good at household affairs or not
He whose parents are busy working all day long is never a dutiful son; to judge whether the mother is kind or not you may only see what her children wear.
Judging from the facial expression of the host, you may know the family is in rising or falling state.
Raise sons as an insurance against the insecurity of old age and store up food in anticipation of famine.
常将有日思无日，莫待无时想有时。
守己不贪终是稳，利人所有定遭亏。
美酒饮当微醉候，好花看到半开时。
当路莫栽荆棘树，他年免挂子孙衣。
Often consider the days when you are rich as those when you were poor,
Don’t think of the past days when you were rich while you are poor.
It is always safe not to be greedy; surely it will make you trouble to hanker after what other people have.
Stop drinking when you are a little tipsy even the wine is sweet; it is the best time to enjoy beautiful flowers when they blossom on half way. ---i.e. know when and where to stop.
Don’t plant thistles and thorns on the way [It means don’t wantonly offend people], lest they should catch the clothes of your children and grandchildren some day.
望于天，必思己所为；
望于人，必思己所施。
When pray to Heaven for help, examine yourself whether you behave yourself well or not;
When ask others for help, examine what you have done good or not for them before.
贪了牲禽的滋益，必招性分的损；
占了人事的便宜，必受天道的亏。
He who is keen on having nourishing food from the meat of birds and animal will cause his instinct harmed;
He who gains extra advantage from others will be punished by the principle of Heaven.
出家如初，成佛有余。
三心一净，四相俱无。
As a Buddhist monk, if he keeps the will as that he did when he just became a monk, surely he’ll become a Buddha.
Out of the three intentions (i.e. that of the past, the present and the future)；out of the four phases(i.e. without human phase, my own phase, all living creatures’ phase and the phase of those who live long).
著意于无，既是有根未斩；
留心于静，便为动芽未锄。
Paying attention to ‘nothing’ means there is still a ‘root’ of ‘existence’; paying attention to ‘stillness’ means there is still a ‘bud’ of ‘movement’.
鹬蚌相争，渔人得利。
城门失火，殃及池鱼。
人而无信，百事皆虚。
言称圣贤，心类穿窬。
学不尚实行，马牛而襟裾。
欲求生富贵，须下苦功夫。
既耕亦己种，时还读我书。
When the snip and the clan grapple, the fisherman gains profit from them (It means a quarrel benefits only a third party).
When the city gate catches fire, the fish in the moat suffers (It means to suffer from other man’s disaster.)
He who loses his credit is good for nothing。
He who preaches the way of sages and virtuous men often harbors the intention of thieves.
He who learns without practice is just like a monkey with a hat on.
He who wants to be rich and noble must study and work hard.
While farming, still I’ll read.
结交须胜己，似我不如无。
同君一夜话，胜读十年书。
Make friends with those who are superior to you, otherwise you had better to do with none.
Talking with you (referring to the wise and virtuous) for one evening is better than studying for ten years.
求人须求大丈夫，济人须济急时无。
渴时一滴如甘露，醉后添杯不如无。
If you ask for help you should ask the true heroes; if you help people you should do in their critical hours.
You’ll feel a drop of water very sweet when you are thirsty; and you’ll feel the sweet wine upset when you are tipsy and take one more drop of it.
做事惟求心可以，待人先看我何如。
害人之心不可有，防人之心不可无。
酒中不语真君子，财上分明大丈夫。
白酒酿成缘好客，黄金散尽为收书。
Act according to your conscience and get along with people in honest way.
You shouldn’t have the intention to harm others but you should have that to guard against them.
It is a true gentleman that keeps silent while tipsy and a true man that is clean in money affairs.
Make sweet wine in order to be hospitable and spend money in order to buy books.
竹蓠茅舍风光好，道院僧舍总不如。
炮凤烹龙，放箸时与盐齑无异；
悬金佩玉，成灰处与瓦砾何殊？
先达笑弹冠，休向侯门轻束带；
相知犹按剑，莫从世路暗投珠。
厚时说尽知心，恐防薄后发泄；
少年不节嗜欲，每致中道而殂
For residence, a bamboo fence around a thatched cottage is quite better and more comfortable than famous Buddhist and Taoist temples (as the former is peaceful and refined while the latter are noisy).
The meat of pheasant and white horse (which were used as sacrifices when the emperors of ancient China officiated at grand ceremonies) and the minced-pork have little difference after they are cooked.
What is the different worth between the jade and the earthen utensils after they are reduced to rubble?
The former men of virtue looked down upon those who sought high posts and handsome profit by all base means; so you shouldn’t lightly bow and scrape before the nobility.
Even facing familiar people one still holds one’s sword, so you shouldn’t rashly join in a gang of villains.
Speak out to your friends what you call in question while you are friendly with them, lest you should air your grievances when you become estranged from one another.
He who doesn't restrain his sex desire when he is young often meets his death in his mid-age.
水至清，则无鱼；人至察，则无徒。
痴人畏妇，贤女敬夫。
妻财之念重，兄弟之情疏。
宁可正而不足，不可斜而有余。
认真还自在，作假费工夫。
是非朝朝有，不听自然无。
If the water is too clear, there will be no fish there; if a man is too upright, he'll have few comrades.
The stupid man fears his wife and the kind woman respects her husband.
He who loves his wife too much will get estranged from his brothers,.
Rather be not enough upright than be surplus crooked.
He who is honest is always in a happy mood; he who tells lies will always have a heavy heart. ----One lie needs seven lies to wait upon it.
There are always tales, but none of them will exist if you don’t believe them.
久住令人贱，频来亲也疏。
但看三五日，相见不如初。
人情似水分高下，世事如云任卷舒。
Staying at your relation’s too long, you’ll be held in contempt; paying to your relations too often, you’ll be estranged from them even you are close to them.
Staying at your friend’s even for three of five days, you will not be welcomed as warmly as the time when you first visited him.
Human relationship is like water, which has its high and low positions; affairs of human life are like the clouds, which are too changeable.
百年成之不足，一旦毁之有余。
训子须从胎教起，端蒙必自《小学》初。
养子不教如养驴，养女不教如养猪。
有田不耕仓廪虚，有书不读子孙愚。
仓廪虚兮岁月乏，子孙愚兮礼义疏。
One hundred years is not enough to have a job done, but one moment is enough to make a mess of it.
To teach your child you must start from prenatal education; to impart rudimentary knowledge of beginners you must first let them read Xiaoxue (The Text-book for Children).
Better raise beasts than raise your children without having them educated.
He who owns cropland but doesn’t farm will make his barns empty; he who owns books but doesn’t read will make his children and grandchildren stupid.
Days are difficult when the barns are empty; courtesies will be lacked when the children and grandchildren are stupid.
茫茫四海人无数，哪个男儿是丈夫？
要好儿孙须积德，欲高门第须读书。
救人一命，胜造七级浮屠；积金千两，不如一解经书。
In the broad world there are numerous people, but which one of them is really heroic man?
If you want your children to be able, you must do good deeds; if you want your family to be noble and rich, you must study hard.
It is better to save one people’s life than to build a seven-storey pagoda; it is better to be good at one classical book than to accumulate one thousand pieces of gold.
静中观物动，闲处看人忙，才得超尘脱俗的趣味；
忙处会偷闲，闲中能取静，便是安身立命的工夫。
Calmly watching things moving, and idly watching people bustling about, you’ll get the flavor of transcending the worldly affairs.
Being able to snatch leisure from busy lives and gaining calmness from the deliberate hours is the ability to settle down and get on with your pursuit.
子教婴孩，妇教初来。
内要伶俐，外要痴呆。
聪明逞尽，惹祸招灾。
能让终有益；忍气免伤财。
富从升合起，贫因不算来。
暗中休使箭，乖里放些呆。
Start to teach your son from his childhood and your wife, from the day when she joins your family.
Hide your cleverness and appear slow-witted.
Showing off enough will invite disaster.
It will benefit you in the long run to give ground to others; to restrain your own temper often prevents you from suffering unexpected financial losses.
Rich comes from accumulating of wealth bit by bit (referring to many a little makes a mickle); poverty comes from lack of plotting and scheming.
Don’t stab people in the back; put a little dullness into wit.
衙门八字开，有理没钱莫进来。
天灾不时有，谁家挂得免战牌。
用人不宜刻，刻则思效者去；
交友不宜滥，滥则贡谀者来。
The gate of a court is always open widely, but you can’t enter it if you don’t have any money even though you are in the right.
There are often natural disasters can any one escape them?
Don’t grudge your subjects and employees, or the men who are willing to serve you will leave。
Don’t make friends without conditions, or the men who flatter and try to gain profit from you will come to you.
财是怨府，贪为祸胎。
乐不可极，乐极生哀；欲不可纵，纵欲成灾。
Wealth leads to misfortune (It means the tall tree catches the wind); greed is the origin of disaster.
