1934年10月至1936年10月中国工农红军进行了史无前例的长征。红军超乎寻常的毅力，战胜了几十万国民党反动军队的围追堵截，越过了人迹罕至的雪山、草地，经历十个省、约二万五千里的征途。终于到达目的地-陕西省北部。1965年，为纪念红军长征胜利30周年，曾参加过长征的萧华将军回顾他在长征中的真实经历、历时半年，完成了12首形象鲜明、感情真挚的史诗。随后，作曲家晨耕、生茂、唐轲、遇秋选择其中的10首谱成了组歌，分别描绘了10个环环相扣的战斗生活场面，并巧妙地把各地区的民间曲调与红军传统歌曲的曲调融合在一起，最终汇成了一部主题鲜明，内容丰富、形式新颖、风格独特的大型声乐套曲-《长征组歌》。
From October 1934 to October 1936, the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army carried out an unprecedented Long March. With extraordinary perseverance, the Red Army overcame hundreds of thousands of Kuomintang reactionary troops, crossed the inaccessible snow-capped mountains and grasslands, and traveled about 25,000 li in 10 provinces. Finally they arrived at the destination - northern Shaanxi Province. In 1965, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the victory of the Red Army's Long March, General Xiao Hua, who had taken part in the Long March, reviewed his real experience in the Long March and completed 12 epic poems with vivid images and sincere feelings in half a year. Subsequently, the composers Chen Geng, Sheng Mao, Tang Ke and Yuqiu chose 10 of them to compose a series of songs, which respectively depicted 10 interlinked scenes of battle life, and skillfully blended the folk tunes of different regions with the tunes of the traditional songs of the Red Army, eventually converging into a series with a distinct theme. The content is rich; the form is novel and the style is unique. This is a large vocal music divertimento —— "The long march suite of songs".
