Some of the best sunsets in the world happen on America's public lands like Mattamuskeet NWR. #NorthCarolina. Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge is located on the Albemarle-Pamlico Peninsula in Hyde County, North Carolina. Established in 1934, the 50,180-acre Refuge consists of open water, marsh, forest and croplands. The centerpiece of the Refuge is the shallow Lake Mattamuskeet. At 40,100 acres, it is North Carolina’s largest natural lake. The Refuge’s strategic location along the Atlantic Flyway makes it a vitally important stopover for wintering waterfowl. Over the past 35 years, up to 80 percent of the Northern Pintail and up to 30 percent of Green-wing Teal that annually migrate along the Flyway utilize Mattamuskeet. In total, the Refuge attracts more than 200,000 ducks, geese and swans from November through February. Photo: Allie Stewart, USFWS。 197. 04/26/2014

Let's end #ArborDay with this great shot from Redwood National Park in #California. Most people know Redwood National Park in California as home to the tallest trees on Earth. But the parks also protect vast prairies, oak woodlands, wild riverways, and nearly 40 miles of pristine coastline, all supporting a rich mosaic of wildlife diversity and cultural traditions. Together, the National Park Service and California State Parks manage these lands for the inspiration, enjoyment, and education of all people. Photo: Jessica Watz. 195. 04/25/2014

For Earth Day, @BLMNational released 3 vintage posters of America's public lands. Here's 1 from Eagletail Mnts. The purpose of the campaign is to highlight these ruggedly beautiful and culturally rich places that belong to all Americans. There are now nearly 900 designated areas of National Conservation Lands spanning almost 27 million acres – or 11 percent of the lands managed by BLM. They include national monuments, national conservation areas, wilderness and wilderness study areas, national wild and scenic rivers, national scenic trails and national historic trails. 190. 04/23/2014

As spring grows ever-stronger, and snowfall makes way for rain at higher and higher elevations in the mountains, the Cascade Mountains begin to truly live up to their name. Mount Rainier National Park contains hundreds of waterfalls, from tiny seasonal streamlets that curtain the roadside cliffs on the way up to Paradise, to the massive thundering cataracts that plunge off the upper mountain. Seney National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1935 as a refuge and breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife. The wild land that today is the refuge has not always appeared so wild. This is a land that was once heavily logged, burned, ditched, drained and cultivated. Despite repeated attempts, the soils and harsh conditions of this country would not provide a hospitable environment for sustained settlement and agriculture. So, nature claimed it once again. What was viewed as a loss by early 20th century entrepreneurs became a huge gain for the wildlife, natural resources and the people of Michigan’s eastern Upper Peninsula. Photo: Dawn Kopp. 160

Be especially cautious when going around blind curves. As this photo shows, sometimes the birds will display right in the center of the roadway… and they are NOT interested in moving out of your way anytime soon! The gobbles of male turkeys can be heard almost a mile away. On The Heels of Point Arena-Stornetta Public Land Designation, BLM Wilderness Specialist Bob Wick and Stunning Photos Featured in CBS Story and Slideshow! 119
On Wednesday, March 12th, national leaders and community residents alike gathered along the California coast to celebrate the designation of Point Arena-Stornetta Public Lands. They gathered to celebrate their years of partnership and conservation of the area, and they gathered to celebrate their collective role in protecting the area for years to come.
But after the speeches and the performances and the stories, Bureau of Land Management Wilderness Specialist Bob Wick did what he does best. In the quiet of the coastal night, Bob snapped another shot, pictured above, of the amazing lands that he loves and has spent his career protecting.
If you follow BLM’s My Public Lands Tumblr, Bob’s photos are like a family photo album. Through them, we travel to national monuments and ghost towns and remote wilderness areas that we may never visit, but know well, through the eyes and lens of Bob Wick.
On March 12, Bob had multiple reasons to celebrate. He joined his BLM colleagues and the California community in celebration of the Point Arena-Stornetta public land designation. And Bob discussed his photography and the beauty and value of our public lands with CBS, who featured his story and photography on the evening news.
Watch and read the CBS interview with Bob. And view the CBS slideshow of Bob’s photos — California’s spectacular coast — that, as CBS news writes, “will make you feel like you’re there!”

As we wrap up our week honoring African American History month, we turn our attention towards the Civil War. African American soldiers and sailors served in the armies and navies of both the Union and Confederacy during the Civil War. By the end of the conflict, over 178,000 black soldiers saw service with the Union army, while as many as 18,000 African Americans joined the Union navy. Service figures for the Confederate States are unknown. African American participation in the Civil War had far reaching effects and implications for the black servicemen themselves, their white comrades in arms, and the society of which they were struggling to become a part and gain respect. The campaign, siege, and defense of Vicksburg (Mississippi) provides two of the earliest instances of African American soldiers serving in combat during the Civil War. Up for a trip to northern Maine? If so, Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge is a great spot for winter sports. This time of year, the refuge in Limestone, offers seven groomed miles of trails perfect for snowshoeing and skiing. If you’re not the cold weather type, and of the angling persuasion, wait until late spring and summer when the refuge hosts an annual fishing derby. Originally part of the Loring Air Force Base, the refuge was founded in 1998 with a primary focus of forest and grassland management. Besides removing the Cold War-era military buildings and demolishing fences and railways, the refuge manages around 400 acres of grasslands. Biologists have even investigated using some of the abandoned military bunkers for artificial bat hibernacula! (Really, it’s true; click here) Located in a part of Maine dominated by potato and broccoli farming, the refuge is key in preserving the northern Maine forests and its wildlife, including upland sandpipers and neotropical migratory birds. If that’s not enough to get you up there, this photo should do the trick. Photo: Sharon Wallace/USFWS 64

Eastern Screech Owls (Megascops asio) are the smallest resident birds of prey in Shenandoah National Park, weighing only about 5-8 oz. (that’s a couple of candy bars). They are active all winter, leaving their cozy tree-cavity nests at night in search of food. In winter, there is usually an abundance of mice and shrews, but other mainstay dinner items are hiding out until spring: frogs, salamanders, small snakes, lizards, moths, caterpillars and other insects. Wiley Screech Owls have been observed on frosty autumn mornings walking around farm fields, picking off inert grasshoppers like grapes. Photo: National Park Service 55

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today proposed to remove the Oregon chub from the list of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife under the Endangered Species Act. If finalized, the chub would be the first fish delisted due to recovery. The Oregon chub, a small minnow found only in the Willamette River Basin in floodplain habitats with little or no water flow, was listed as endangered in 1993 and reclassified as threatened in 2010. The primary factors that threatened Oregon chub were loss of habitat and predation by nonnative fishes. These threats have been lessened over the last 20 years through collaborative partnerships to restore and acquire habitat, promote natural water flows, and conduct education and outreach to local landowners and residents; efforts that were accompanied by the reintroduction of chub into historical habitat. 46

Mountain Longleaf National Wildlife Refuge is situated within the Southern Appalachian Mountain Range between Atlanta, Georgia (90 miles) and Birmingham, Alabama (60 miles). The refuge was established May 29, 2003 on the former military training lands of Fort McClellan. Mountain Longleaf NWR became the 542nd refuge in the country. The primary objective in establishing the refuge was the protection and management of the last remaining old growth stands and the best remaining mountain longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) forests in the Southeast. The 9,000-acre mountain refuge contains beautiful vistas and a rugged landscape of unfragmented forests. Photo: Sarah Clardy. 8

Lee’s second and most ambitious invasion of the North. Often referred to as the “High Water Mark of the Rebellion,” Gettysburg was the war’s bloodiest battle with 51,000 casualties. .
