Dear Greg,
Here's what happened this week at Interior: a special ceremony on the National Mall to mark the reopening of the Washington Monument; Secretary Jewell joins Vice President Joe Biden in St. Louis as work continues on the revitalization of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial; the Secretary travels to Des Moines, Iowa for a meeting of the White House Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience, and wraps up her Iowa trip with a visit to the Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge; drought-stricken California is getting $20 million in water reuse and reclamation projects; and Interior observes National Police Week.

Thanks,

"In this temple, as in the hearts of the people for whom he saved the Union, the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever." Beneath these words, the 16th President of the United States sits immortalized in marble as an enduring symbol of unity, strength, and wisdom. The Lincoln Memorial was dedicated on this date in 1922. Let's celebrate with this photo by Andrew S. Geraci. 204. 05/30/2014

Looking for a wow photo? This picture of the Milky Way over Natural Bridges Natl Monument should do the trick. The three majestic natural bridges of Natural Bridges National Monument in Utah invite you to ponder the power of water in a landscape usually defined by its absence. View them from an overlook, or hit the trails and experience their grandeur from below. Declared a National Monument in 1908, the bridges are named “Kachina,” “Owachomo” and “Sipapu” in honor of the Native Americans that once made this area their home. This is also home to some of the darkest night skies in the United States.

#MemorialDayWeekend is the unofficial start of summer, so here's a warm weather pic from @SleepingBearNPS. Miles of sand beach, bluffs that tower 450’ above Lake Michigan, lush forests, clear inland lakes, unique flora and fauna make up the natural world of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. High dunes afford spectacular views across the lake. An island lighthouse, US Life-Saving Service stations, coastal villages, and picturesque farmsteads reflect the park’s rich maritime, agricultural, and recreational history. In the shadow of 13,063-foot Wheeler Peak, 5,000 year old bristlecone pine trees grow on rocky glacial moraines. Come to Great Basin National Park in Nevada to experience the solitude of the desert, the smell of sagebrush after a thunderstorm, the darkest of night skies, and the beauty of Lehman Caves. Far from a wasteland, the Great Basin is a diverse region that awaits your discovery. 192. 05/24/2014

Wondering what America's newest National Monument looks like? Here's a great photo of the Organ Mountains. Today President Obama signed a proclamation establishing the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument in south-central New Mexico. By establishing the monument, the President permanently protected nearly 500,000 acres to preserve the prehistoric, historic, and scientific values of the area for the benefit of all Americans. A recent independent study found that a new national monument could generate $7.4 million in new economic activity annually from new visitors and business opportunities while preserving access for sportsmen, ranchers, and recreational users. Amazing photo of the Trona Pinnacles under the stars in the #California Desert. Ken Lee took this fantastic photo from the California Desert National Conservation Area. Here’s what he had to say about it. “A heavenly nocturnal show of the movement of the stars with the glow of the little town of Trona below. I had driven four hours to see this, a privilege to see the night sky without too much light pollution, utterly magical. The Trona Pinnacles is one of the most unusual geological features in the Mojave Desert of California, its unusual landscape consisting of hundreds of tufa spires rising from a former lake bed, stark mountains bracketing the formations.” 176. 05/15/2014

Today we’re happy to announce the winner of the 2013 Share the Experience photo contest (this contest is where we get a lot of the photos you see on this account)! This year’s grand prize winner comes to us from a family outing and according to Courtney; it almost didn’t happen as she was not sure she would take her phone with her on the kayak trip for fear of dropping it in the choppy lake. Lucky for Courtney, she decided to risk it and bring the phone to document the trip. Although she grew up in Michigan, this was Courtney’s first trip to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and she described it as being on her mom’s “bucket list.” Both Courtney and her mom are always up for adventure in the outdoors as Courtney describes it best by “Nature grounds you where you can get your perspective on life back. That’s what it does for me.” We could not agree more! Congratulations Courtney! 153. 05/01/2014

Rather go to a Caribbean paradise than to the North Pole during the holidays? This beach at Maho Bay, on the north side of the island of St. John, recently was added to Virgin Islands National Park. The 225-acre beach and the hillside above it are the largest single addition to the park since it was created in 1956. The Trust for Public Land announced on December 18 that the area has been protected from development through a series of land sales to the National Park Service from 2009-2013 using federal monies from the Land and Water Conservation Fund. One of the many things that make Grand Canyon National Park so amazing, is the night sky. The dark, dark, dark night sky. If you haven’t experienced it, then you are truly missing out. Due to very little light pollution, Grand Canyon has one of the darkest night skies around. Tonight is the peak of the Geminids meteor shower. Last night, the Geminids put on quite the show. Streaks of light were shooting across the sky above the canyon. It was a breathtaking sight. Photo provided by Erin Whittaker, Grand Canyon National Park 132
Here is another winning photo from the Bureau of Land Management - Nevada’s photo contest, which is helping to celebrate Nevada’s 150th birthday next year. This photo was taken by Michael Balen at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Here’s what he had to say about the photo.
"I took the photo because of the intense profusion of wildflowers that bloomed in the area during spring 2013. The time of day offered low-angle sunlight and nearly perfect lighting and contrast conditions. The clouds added to the scene and the illumination of the Sheep Range in the background added to the sense of place. I was attempting to emphasize the contrast between the concept of the dry, brown desert and the unusual occurrence of abundant wildflowers in a place most people think of as generally devoid of life." 134

Here’s one of the winners by Kent A. Lefevre of the Rainbow Mountain Wilderness. This is what he had to say about his photo. "The Rainbow Mountain Wilderness is one of my favorite places. This image was taken early in the morning after a winter storm swept through the Red Rock escarpment. The sun was beginning to burn off the low enveloping fog. The outside temperature was below freezing and it was snowing as I packed all my gear to the spot I had in mind near the Oak Creek Trail. As the fog lifted, I was amazed at the grand vista and the sheer beauty of this corner of Nevada." 146

Point Arena: uniquely Californian and absolutely beautiful. 11/9/2013
.
Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell hosted a public listening session in Point Arena, California yesterday to hear from the community about their vision to conserve a scenic and significant area of coastal public lands in Mendocino County.
The meeting comes on the heels of Secretary Jewell’s major speech on conservation where she emphasized support for locally-driven efforts to preserve and protect places that hold special meaning to communities across the country. Congressman Huffman, along with Congressman Mike Thompson, Senator Barbara Boxer and Senator Dianne Feinstein, has introduced legislation to include approximately 1,255 acres of the Point Arena-Stornetta Public Lands to the existing California Coastal National Monument. A Bureau of Land Management report estimates that outdoor recreation on the public lands in California contributed nearly $900 million to the economy in 2012.

This afternoon Secretary Jewell will discuss her conservation vision for the country, noting that we have a moral obligation to act now to conserve and protect our national treasures for future generations and that some places are too special to develop. She will discuss efforts to strengthen the nation’s economy through healthy lands and waters, and will lay out steps Interior will take to engage the next generation.

This photo by Bob Wicks (mypubliclands.tumblr.com) from the Upper Missouri Rivers Breaks National Monument in Montana is an example of the use of use of framing to add a sense of intrigue to the image by blocking part of the view – Viewers will look at the person in the “Hole in the Rock” and wonder what that individual is seeing. To access the Hole in the Rock and other amazing photogenic rock formations, one must take a multi-day float trip down the Upper Missouri Wild and Scenic River. You will be following the same route (albeit going downstream) that Lewis and Clark came up on their voyage of discovery. The Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument hold a spectacular array of plant life, wildlife, unique geological features, endless recreational opportunities and significant historical and cultural values. The 149-mile Upper Missouri National Wild and Scenic River flows through the monument. The land and the rugged, surrounding uplands (commonly call the Missouri Breaks) are defined in part by their history.

Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1966 in cooperation with the State of Maine to protect valuable salt marshes and estuaries for migratory birds. Located along 50 miles of coastline in York and Cumberland counties, the refuge consists of eleven divisions between Kittery and Cape Elizabeth. It will contain approximately 14,600 acres when land acquisition is complete. The proximity of the refuge to the coast and its location between the eastern deciduous forest and the boreal forest creates a composition of plants and animals not found elsewhere in Maine. Major habitat types present on the refuge include forested upland, barrier beach/dune, coastal meadows, tidal salt marsh, and the distinctive rocky coast.

Bering Land Bridge National Preserve - Gone are the shockingly bright pinks, yellows and purples of summer, replaced by deeper and darker reds, yellows, greens and the beginnings of brown, all of equal vibrancy and beauty. And soon, as the 34 degree weather and diminishing daylight would lead us to believe, a blanket of white will fall upon the landscape. Enjoy the change of seasons wherever you may be! 09/19/2013
