On Wise Ruler
The wiser the ruler, the greater his sense of fear; the stronger he is, the more cautious he becomes. Therefore, a wise ruler contemplates danger in times of peace, considers limits in times of success, and reflects on loss in times of gain. As the 《Book of Zhou》 says: “It is like facing a deep abyss or walking on thin ice,” emphasizing the importance of carefulness in handling affairs.
- 《Lü Annals -Lüshi Chunqiu-Prudence on Being Big》
Confucius said: “If one can correct oneself, what difficulty is there in governing others? But if one cannot correct oneself, how can one possibly correct others?”
-《The Analects Vol. 9》
