己所不欲,勿施于人【註】 Do Not Impose upon Others What You Yourself Do Not Desire 子贡问曰:“有一言而可以终身行之者乎?”子曰:“其恕乎!己所不欲,勿施于人。” Zigong asked: “Is there one word that can serve as a rule for life?” 子曰:“巧言乱德,小不忍,则乱大谋。” The Master said: “Clever words can corrupt virtue; Failure to endure small difficulties can ruin great plans.” 子曰:“躬自厚而薄责于人,则远怨矣。” The Master said: “If a man demands much from himself and little from others, he will keep far from resentment.” 子贡问为仁,子曰:“工欲善其事,必先利其器。居是邦也,事其大夫之贤者,友其士之仁者。” Zigong asked about benevolence. The Master said: “If a craftsman wishes to do good work, he must first sharpen his tools. In serving a state, associate yourself with upright ministers, and befriend those who are virtuous among the scholars.” 子曰:“人无远虑,必有近忧。” The Master said: “If a man has no long-term concerns, he will surely face near-term troubles.” 子曰:“志士仁人无求生以害仁,有杀身以成仁。” The Master said: “The man of resolve and benevolence will not live at the expense of his virtue; he would rather give up his life to preserve it.” 子张问行,子曰:“言忠信,行笃敬,虽蛮貊之邦行矣;言不忠信,行不笃敬,虽州里行乎哉?立则见其参于前也;在舆则见其倚于衡也,夫然后行。”子张书诸绅。 Zizhang asked about conduct. The Master said: “Speak with sincerity and truth; act with steadfast respect. Then, even in the lands of the uncivilized, your conduct will be proper. But if your words lack sincerity and your actions lack respect, how can you be acceptable even among your own people? When standing, let loyalty and reverence appear before you; when riding in a carriage, let them seem to rest upon the crossbar before you. Only after you have made them so visible in your heart and bearing, may you act.” Zizhang wrote these words upon his sash. -- 《The Analects · Duke Ling of Wei》 道之以政,齊之以刑,民免而無恥;道之以德,齊之以禮,有恥且格。 If people are guided by government orders and regulate them with punishments, they may avoid wrongdoing but will have no sense of shame. If they are guided with virtue and regulated with ritual propriety, they will develop a sense of shame and moreover become upright. - 《The Analects · On Administration》 有国有家者,不患寡而患不均,不患贫而患不安。盖均无贫,和无寡,安无倾。 For one who governs a state or a household, the worry is not scarcity but unfair distribution of wealth, not poverty but unrest. So if wealth is fairly distributed, people won’t feel the poverty; when all in harmony, people won't feel the scarcity.
