March 16 Monday, 2020 Dear Greg, As new reports of Coronavirus (COVID-19) continue to develop, there's no denying that we have waded into unprecedented waters. The health and safety of our employees and customers remains our first priority, and because of that, I want to share my thoughts on these difficult times.I've been in this business for a long time and have seen my fair share of highs and lows. One thing that has served me well throughout my career is the need to pause and take a deep breath during turbulent periods. To feel anxious is normal - it's hard not to be in a world that is changing day to day. We are faced with unparalleled challenges and adversity. But if history tells us anything, it's that the human condition will rise to the challenges we face, as we are doing now. No one knows what tomorrow will bring but that doesn't mean we stop preparing for it. HSBC has been connecting customers to opportunities since 1865. As one of the largest banking and financial services organizations in the world, we are incredibly diversified, with operations in 64 countries and territories. Our expertise and experience has allowed us to be where the growth is for more than 150 years, enabling businesses to thrive, economies to prosper, and ultimately, helping people to fulfil their hopes and realize their ambitions. While today's markets are experiencing unprecedented volatility, rest assured that our best and brightest are working tirelessly to understand this environment. With a bench as deep as ours, we're aware of the historical parallels and potential outcomes. Fear and uncertainty are real and tangible emotions and it is easy to succumb to the unprecedented negative news and the panic in the market. That is why on a personal note, I recently spoke to my own financial advisor to review my family's financial plan, and to ensure we can still achieve our goals despite the current and - potentially further - market turbulence. It was a great discussion and her advice was to stay the course as this crisis, like those in the past, will come to an end. 'Don't panic and take a long-term view,' were words that helped put me and my family at ease. Based on my experience, I'd encourage you to seek advice from your financial advisor as well. Please know that we have comprehensive plans in place to ensure our employees remain safe and are ready and able to serve our customers without disruption. Following my signature below are additional details regarding HSBC's resilience and further information we feel is important to put in your hands. As the situation evolves we will adjust our efforts accordingly. Additionally, I encourage you to access your accounts and perform routine banking transactions at home using Personal Internet Banking or the HSBC Mobile Banking App, as well as an ATM near you where you can also access cash. You can also visit global health organization websites that provide more information on the coronavirus, including the World Health Organization and International SOS. Above all, I want you to know that you can continue to rely on the global resources and stability of HSBC Bank. We stand with you, ready to help, offer advice and share our best thinking on how to navigate through this challenging period. Thank you and remember we're here to help. Michael Roberts Chief Executive Officer, HSBC USA
March 13 Friday, 2020 Baoyin -- It is time to close our public schools for the safety and well-being of the students, teachers, and staff. This is not an easy decision, but we must take aggressive measures to stop the spread of coronavirus/COVID-19. Teaching and learning cannot take place under these circumstances. The City must immediately come up with a plan that includes childcare relief for families who need it so that our essential workers, especially healthcare workers, can continue with their duties. We must also ensure meals and medical care are provided for students who rely on schools for these crucial services. I have repeatedly said it is not time to panic. But it is time to act. We must take bold, decisive measures to do everything we can to limit the spread of coronavirus/COVID-19. This pandemic presents an enormous challenge for us as a city. But I have complete confidence in our ability to get through this together. The decisions we make will be difficult ones, but we must move forward with the common good in mind. We must limit the spread of this virus while at the same time working to protect our most vulnerable friends, family, and neighbors. In times of trouble New Yorkers never fail to come together. By doing so, we rise to every occasion. I have no doubt that we will weather this crisis as we have past crises. And in the end we will be stronger. This is the New York way. Thank you, Corey Johnson

January 30, Thursday, 2020 Good morning. Because of the recent news reports on the coronavirus, the Library has been continuing to monitor the various updates given by the City’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). At the present time, DOHMH and the CDC suggest some ways to protect ourselves against all respiratory viruses: · Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or by using an alcohol based hand sanitizer if soap and water aren’t available. · Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands. · Cover your mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. · If you’re feeling sick, stay home and/or seek medical care. Here are links you can visit to familiarize yourself with the latest news: · https://www1.nyc.gov/site/doh/health/health-topics/coronavirus.page · https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html You can also follow the CDC or World Health Organization (WHO) via Instagram or Facebook at @cdcgov and @WHO. Flags Lowered: Immediately Flags Returned to Full-Staff: Notice to follow December 3, 2019 (The Tuesday after Thanksgiving) Dear Colleagues, As many of you know, today is Giving Tuesday, the international day of charitable giving that occurs the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. This spirit of giving is also at the heart of our “It’s Time for Kind” campaign to encourage the public and all of us here to carry out acts of kindness throughout the holiday season and beyond. If you are looking for ideas to give today, please consider donating your unused sick and/or annual leave to the Library’s “Donated Sick Leave Bank” for our colleagues who need additional sick leave. Please email Jezabelle Durecout or call her at 718 990 0736 for more information. You could also consider contributing to the QPL/Food Bank For NYC Canned Food Drive. According to Food Bank for NYC, one in five New York City children struggles with hunger and more than 1.2 million NYC residents, or 14.4 percent, are food insecure. Please consider donating at least one or two cans of food before the drive ends this Saturday, December 7. Our goal is to collect 6,000 pounds of canned goods from our staff and the public. Thank you for your kindness and generous support! January 8, 2020 Good Afternoon, Now that the snow season has arrived, there may be days when the entire system or individual branches will be closed all day, open late, or close early. A decision will be communicated to you and to our customers as early as possible. To find out about full or partial closings when there is a storm or any other emergency, please: • Call QPL’s main phone number, 718-990-0700, and listen to the automated message • Keep an eye on your QPL e-mail inbox for an all-staff notification • Visit the QPL website; a notice on the homepage will be posted with details • Check QPL’s Facebook page or Twitter and Instagram feeds. In general, the Library will be open unless the Mayor issues a statement encouraging all non-emergency personnel to stay off the roads, or if mass transit shuts down. However, full and partial closings will be determined on a case-by-case basis. The City’s Office of Emergency Management posts notifications about weather emergencies, school and transit closings, and power outages through Notify NYC, the City’s official source for information about emergency events and important City services. Notify NYC also sends notifications directly to New Yorkers via text and e-mail. You can enroll here. Thanks for your attention. Notification issued 03-13-2020 at 11:18 AM. Happy Friday. The government alone is not going to solve the city’s novel coronavirus problems, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a press conference. Rather, it’s the actions taken by the city’s residents that are going to either slow this thing down or let it run wild. (March 13, 2020)
