谷启楠
谷启楠，山东威海人，南开大学外国语学院英语系教授。1965年毕业于南开大学外文系英语专业，后留校任教，直至2002年退休，期间曾于1983至1984年到加拿大不列颠哥伦比亚大学语言教育系进修。
历任南开大学英语系助教、讲师、副教授、教授、硕士生导师。多年来从事英语专业本科生精读、翻译、文学等课的教学，和硕士研究生英美文学课的教学。并从事英美文学、加拿大文学和文学翻译的研究。
1991年获加拿大教学与出版奖学金。1995年被评为天津市优秀教师， 1996年获得国务院颁发的政府特殊津贴。曾任中国加拿大研究会、英汉语比较研究会、美国文学研究会、全国英国文学学会、全国高校外国文学教学研究会理事。
主要著述包括：论文《外语教学中阅读技能的训练》、《文化教学与外语教学》、《理解原作是文学翻译的关键》、《论《红楼梦》文化内容的翻译》（合著）、《一曲强劲的黑人觉醒之歌—论<桑尼的布鲁斯曲>的深刻内涵》等。教材《加拿大短篇小说选读》（合编），《美国文学选读》（参编）；译著《达洛维太太》、《幕间》、《福斯特短篇小说集》、《塞巴斯蒂安·奈特的真实生活》、《老人与海》（2012年出版）、专著《文踪译迹—谷启楠文集》（南开大学出版社2019年9月出版， ISBN 978-7-310-05854-9）、译著《月亮与六便士》（人民文学出版社2016年7月出版，ISBN 978-7-02-013803-6）。

欧美同性恋文学与电影关系的研究断断续续，不过，因为前期阅读了伍尔夫的《达洛维夫人》而喜欢上谷启楠译文的文笔，却也延续了下来。
因为谷的译文好，所以上亚马逊网查了谷的译作。买了《红色英勇标志》《幕间》，看到谷还译了《塞巴斯蒂安·奈特的真实生活》，虽然我已经有了纳博科夫的准全集，不过，还是买了。她最近还译了海明威的《老人与海》，我同样怀着好奇，买下再说。
昨天，开始读《奈特》，译得很舒服，流畅而机智。当然，因为没有去对照，好在哪里也说不上。《奈特》可以说是纳的虚构式自传。纳博科夫的地位远未得到认知，他的著作一加起来，我认为就是英语世界中的《追忆逝水年华》，而且更加的好看，更加的富于才智。纳博科夫一点也不比普鲁斯差，不比乔伊斯差。如果有人将纳排在二十世纪英语文学的第一位，我一点也不会惊讶。
于是，我上网查了谷启楠是何许人。原来是位女教授，南开大学65年毕业。那本《英勇标志》的另一位译者刘士聪，是她的丈夫呢。
昨天在读《奈特》的时候，就在想，是不是要给谷教授写封信，感谢她的优秀译作。要直接读英文原作，恐怕速度跟不上，现在没有这个耐性，所以还得借助于优秀的译作。现在，优秀的译作实在不多。许多年轻人一上来便译一大堆，但质量不好恭维还在其次，最不好的是败坏了读杰作的胃口。前些天重读托马斯·曼的《威尼斯之死》，还是名家钱春绮译的，但读得难受（二十多年前读它就感觉很有意思）。为什么，他那个时代使用的语言习惯和现在很不一样，或者说，他那个时代对译文的翻译风格与现在大不相同。为此，买了另外几本《死于威尼斯》的不同译法，实在是无奈。
教授，其实用不着写那么多的论文，我是指外语学院的教授。谷的论文写得也不怎样，但她译得好，就这足够。一个教授能翻译出五六部优秀的外国杰作，无论是文学还是社会科学，就非常对得起这个职业，而且是超越性的贡献。没有多少人会去读教授写的论文，除非业内的专门人士，但是反过来，优秀的译文受惠者无以数计，且这种惠泽是隐形的，可能披泽几十年甚至上百年。如果不是谷的译文，我对伍尔夫不好有太多的好感，那真是我的极大遗憾。
现在拿起笔写封信不容易，谷教授退休了，寄到南开外语学院也不见得能送达，刚才上网想找谷教授的电子邮箱，但找不到。现在写这个，仅致非常感谢她的精准与优雅。
在网上，看到了谷教授年轻时的照片，漂亮、美好；她的先生刘士聪据说当时是外语学院蓝球队的，哪怕是晚年，看上去也非常有风度。
精品才值得追求，才值得创造性地献身。
因为有精品，人生便了有了难得的喜悦时光。给我们喜悦时光的人，我们怎么能不向往呢或真诚地献上我们的好意呢，因为人家也将有质地的好意给了我们呀。

谷启楠、朱柏桐在加拿大留学。 这是我（朱柏桐）刚做的美篇，是1983年在加拿大留学时照的。暑假期间我和谷启楠从多伦多出发一路经过美国的纽约州到达纽约历时十几天。期间在谷启楠的美国朋友家小住几日，尽享幽静美丽的田园风光，到纽约在我妹夫工作的医院宿舍住几日。欣赏了国际大都会的奢侈繁华。这样我们共度了一段美好难忘的时光。

Andrew Marvell (31 March 1621 – 16 August 1678) was an English metaphysical poet, Parliamentarian, and the son of a Church of England clergyman (also named Andrew Marvell). As a metaphysical poet, he is associated with John Donne and George Herbert. He was a colleague and friend of John Milton.
Marvell was born in Winestead-in-Holderness, East Riding of Yorkshire, near the city of Kingston upon Hull. The family moved to Hull when his father was appointed Lecturer at Holy Trinity Church there, and Marvell was educated at Hull Grammar School. A secondary school in the city is now named after him.
Marvell’s poetry is often witty and full of elaborate conceits in the elegant style of the metaphysical poets. His most famous poems include To His Coy Mistress, The Garden, An Horatian Ode upon Cromwell's Return from Ireland, and the Country House Poem, "Upon Appleton House".

Where Jarring Windes to infant Nature plaid.
All Musick was a solitary sound,
To hollow Rocks and murm'ring Fountains bound.
Jubal first made the wilder Notes agree;
And Jubal tun'd Musicks Jubilee:
He call'd the Ecchoes from their sullen Cell,
And built the Organs City where they dwell.
Each sought a consort in that lovely place;
And Virgin Trebles wed the manly Base.
From whence the Progeny of numbers new
Into harmonious Colonies withdrew.
Some to the Lute, some to the Viol went,

To sing Mens Triumphs, or in Heavens quire.
Then Musick, the Mosaique of the Air,
